ABOUT US
The Magnolia High School Theatre Department has a rich and evolving history marked by creativity, student empowerment, and competitive excellence.
Foundations and Philosophy
The program has long emphasized hands-on learning and student ownership. Former director Rod Sheffield, who began teaching at Magnolia in 2012, encouraged students to take creative risks and ownership of each production. His approach helped foster a culture of excellence, where students felt empowered to push boundaries and grow as artists.
Competitive Legacy
Magnolia’s theatre department has consistently participated in the UIL One-Act Play competitions, earning accolades at district, area, and state levels. Even during challenging times—like the COVID-19 quarantine in 2020, which halted competitions—the department continued to rehearse and produce work, demonstrating resilience and commitment to the craft.
Recent Triumphs
Under the leadership of Rod Sheffield and Justin Vincent, the department reached new heights by winning the 2024 UIL 5A State Championship with their production of Black Snow. This victory reflects years of dedication, mentorship, and a thriving student-led creative culture.
